“Heaven’s On Fire” – The Radio Dept.

February 26 2010

The Radio DeptLund, Sweden! A city over 1000 years old inhabited by 45,000 cycling-enthused residents and the other 55,000 who run them over in their tiny, eco-friendly cars! Home to Lund University, Lund Cathedral, and other such landmarks with the word “Lund” in title! Lund!—where The Radio Dept. are from! Okay. It seems Sweden’s becoming a little bit of a theme when it comes to new music I immediately become obsessed with, “Heaven’s On Fire” being the latest track. It’s a catchy dream-pop that’s spiked with jazzy guitar and saxophone riffs and a nineties piano sound filling in the low points. When I was brainstorming descriptors before writing this post, Weather Channel music was the first word that came into head, which it kind of is, but since that’s essentially an insult to musicians, I’m obliged to say that it’s kind of so much better than that as well. The vibe is there, but if you think about it too much you’ll start to feel really lame for liking “Heaven’s On Fire”—and you will, like it I mean :-)

“Blood” – The Middle East

Feb 25 2010, 7:42AM

As a special treat for not being on air this week, I wanted to share a song that we’re going to be hearing on next week’s show. The band’s called The Middle East, the album The Recordings of The Middle East, the song—no, not “A Song by The Middle East from the album called The Recordings of The Middle East,” but—“Blood.”The Middle East It’s not as macabre as all that. In “Blood,” the Queensland five-piece combine the acoustic delight of Iron & Wine, the breathy falsetto of Jonsi, and, as an indie staple, indulge in the playing of bells and whistling, creating a five minute wonder worth of a spot on the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack. Though somewhat heard-of in their native Australia (well, so says Wikipedia), they're picking up speed here, playing SXSW, Coachella, and the Sasquatch Music Festival. Take a listen, and if you like The Middle East you can download “Blood” free from their website.

February 24 2010: No Show This Week

Feb 24 2010, 1:35PM

Loyal M. J-ians and K. Kreig-ians, sorry to bring you bad news on a blog that's usually so full of joy and happiness and bear hugs and high fives, but there will be no live edition of The Mike James & DJ Kriegs Show this week. You're wonderful hosts have escaped the hustle and bustle of Milledgeville to do some snow-bathing on Lac Saint-Jean, 4 and 3/4 hours north of Montreal. But fear not, we'll have a face-meltingly good indie themed show for you next week :-)

“The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance” (Miike Snow Remix) – Vampire Weekend

Feb 23 2010, 7:39PM

Miike Snow Vampire WeekendBonnaroo 2010 participant Miike Snow and Coachella 2010 participants Vampire Weekend, teamed up for a totally rad, ace, and stellar remix of Vamp’s “The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance” from the recent Contra. It’s the kind of song I’d like to hear if I was rollin’ at a summer festival or a rave—well, if anyone would take me to one…. Hell, I’d even get down to it schwasty-fayst/schwasty-sober at a local nightclub—again, calling all invitations. I’m lonely :`(

Anyway, it’s a great song that I pounded on the 9-hour car ride to New Orleans this past weekend. I invite you to pound it also—and for $0 down, $0 monthly payment (for 60 months).

Same Photoshoot Idea?

While browsing for music and fact-checking musicians for this week's show (Wednesday at 6:30PM, in case you didn't know), I came across this picture of Australian electronic duo PNAU (pictured right) who seem to have had the same semi-naked meadow idea for a photoshoot as Swedish electronic duo Lo-Fi-Fnk (pictured left). Beyond strange...

"July Flame" - Laura Veirs

Laura Veirs is just fantastic. I recently discovered her randomly and started listening to one of her older albums, Years of Meteors, and immediately fell in love with the folksy sound I tend to get obsessed with (Ingrid Michaelson? yeahhhh). And she does remind me a lot of Ingrid Michaelson, which may be why I've compulsively been listening to it for the past week :-) BUT now Laura Veirs has a new album coming out this month, complete with a fabulous new single, July Flame.

AND if you like what you hear, I give you permission to go see her LIVE in Atlanta on the 20th.

also, check out another great song by her, Galaxies (a personal fave)

"Marchin' In" - Lo-Fi-Fnk

Oh-so-pasty Swedish slowcoaches, Lo-Fi-Fnk (abbreviated to LFF for ease of pronunciation) have been out of the record releasing business since 2006 when Boylife came out. But luckily 2010 is--hopefully--the year for album number two, although solid reports about said release are hard to some by. they have, however, released a new song "Marchin' In," an upbeat, electro epic guaranteed to raise the spirits. I take "Marchin' In" as a good sign of a new album on the horizon, exciting news for this fan of their quirky style and often odd-sounding English-as-a-second-language lyrics. Enjoy, and keep your fingers crossed.

"Go Do" - Jonsi

Since myself and Katie are quite literally obsessed with Sigur Ros--and so by default, with Jonsi--I thought I take the chance to share the lastest track circling the web. Although not a free download like "Boy Lilikoi," we get to constantly stream "Go Do" thanks to YouTube, and admire it's ephemerality, complexity, it's locomotion towards cathartic release, and make the obvious assertion that, based on the music of Jonsi, Iceland must be filled with dancing fools. What is less admirable is that Mr. Solo Sigur Ros ISN'T COMING TO ATLANTA FOR HIS NORTH AMERICAN TOUR!
